COURSE OVERVIEW

The focus of this course is on matters of tactical significance, from defining supply management for an organization to identifying specific tools and techniques that are often used in the procurement process.

The lessons in this course are interrelated. In Lesson 1, we discuss what a supply chain is and how purchasing fits within the overall supply chain. This will be followed by exploring the following concepts and tools:

COURSE GOALS

Upon completion of this course, candidates should be able to:

  • Describe the historical developments of procurement and how it fits within an overall supply chain
  • Define supply chain management, value chain and purchasing
  • Define types of tender processes and explain their uses
  • Understand the integration of supply chain with enterprise objectives
  • Explain best practices for sourcing, selecting and evaluating suppliers
  • Explain contract formation, the competitive bidding laws of Canada and ethics
  • Apply negotiation tactics and techniques appropriately
  • Appreciate the use of calculations for the total cost of ownership, the break-even point, cost management and the learning curve
  • Understand the need for quality from suppliers
  • Describe the basics and need for lean inventory management
  • Explain the differences between commercial, government and retail buying of goods and services

REFUND POLICY

You are eligible for a refund minus an administration fee of $100.00 plus tax for cancellation/withdrawal requests received in writing before the start date; thereafter, no refund will be available. Transfer requests to a future offering are permissible only if received in writing and accompanied by supporting documentation within 7 days of the start date. Credits to be used for future offerings are valid for 12 months from the date of initial payment and will expire if not used in that time frame. Please contact Saskatchewan Institute for details regarding eligibility to transfer.

What is the asynchronous learning?

Asynchronous learning is a form of online, self-study and is designed for those who prefer to work at their own pace, while meeting submission deadlines as defined in the course overview. Learners will not have live, scheduled meetings or classes, but will participate via our learning management system, Brightspace (D2L), where information, ideas and learning experiences can be shared. Learners will also have access to an instructor.

What is synchronous learning?

Synchronous learning, previously known at Supply Chain Canada as virtual, instructor led. Learners will have live, scheduled classes via Zoom with the instructor and fellow classmates. This format is designed for those looking for an interactive learning experience, and to network with other participants. Learners may have readings and assignments to complete ahead of the start dates that will facilitate the multi-day class discussion. Participants are expected to remain up to date with the deadlines provided. Please NOTE the time zone in which you register for synchronous courses. Please NOTE the time zone when you register for this format as there are multiple options.
